Since the terrible events that took place in Japan last Friday, Olympus Europe and its employees have been constantly thinking of our Japanese colleagues, their relatives, and all of the Japanese people. All our hopes and wishes are with them during these terrible times.

We are fortunate to be able to report that no Olympus employee has been injured during the Earthquake, the Tsunami, or any other event so far. However some people are still searching for their relatives.

We have received many inquiries about what consequences these events will have on our business in Europe. Obviously, at this point in time, no-one can give a complete picture. This is why we have decided to publish frequent updates on this information, until the situation in Japan becomes stabile once again. Please return to this web page frequently, for any news we are able to share.

General Situation:

Olympus has three factories in the North of Japan: Aizu, Shirakawa, and Aomori.

All three factories have either been undamaged by events or received only minor damage and will be repaired within a short period of time. Other factories and facilities in Japan have no serious damage.

Nevertheless, Olympus' operational situation depends on the unpredictable conditions currently being experienced by everyone in Japan:

Electricity and water supplies can and will be subject to shortages; public transportation may suffer from intermittent non-operation; and the supply chain formed of planes, ships and trucks is not operating normally at present.

Situation by Product Area:

While only a part of our product line-up is produced in Japan, the general conditions after the earthquake may have an impact on supply in some of our product areas:

We do not foresee any specific delays for Microscopy and Consumer products at the moment.

Due to the impact of the earthquake on some of our medical factories in Japan, we foresee some minor delays in some areas of our Medical Endoscopy and Surgical business. Our teams in Japan and Europe will take measures to compensate for this as much as possible. A precise forecast on the impact on product supply cannot be given at this moment.
PRESS INFORMATION
A portable creative studio in D-SLR format

Express yourself with the Olympus E-30

Hamburg, 5 November 2008 – For many, the pursuit of artistic expression is the essence of creative photography. With the Olympus E-30, this objective is closer to reality than ever. The stunning new model joins the ranks of the Four Thirds System-based E-System line-up, incorporating an inspiring range of Art Filters that support the photographer’s vision. The filters let moods be conveyed that would otherwise only be possible through the use of special lenses, add-on filters or via complex image processing techniques. The effects can be seen on the 2.7”/6.9cm free-angle HyperCrystal II LCD before shooting for perfect image composition. Ensuring an enjoyable photo experience, the monitor facilitates Live View framing ease from virtually any perspective and the high-speed contrast autofocus* guarantees faithful on-screen depictions. Wireless flash control capabilities and an expressive Multiple Exposure mode further bolster the potential for distinctive artistry in compositions, as do the choice of nine separate aspect ratios. The newly-developed high-speed 12.3 Megapixel Live MOS sensor together with the new TruePic III+ image processing engine ensure incredible high-definition results. Thanks to built-in image stabilisation, effective to an equivalent of 5 EV steps, photos remain blur-free even in extreme situations – irrespective of the attached lens. And because that one-of-a-kind moment is often fleeting, the E-30 equips photographers with what they need to capture it: industry-leading autofocus speeds with a fully-biaxial 11-point AF, 5fps sequential shooting and a shutter that’s as fast as 1/8000th sec. Naturally, this latest E-System model also incorporates the Olympus-exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter, guaranteeing the most effective protection against dust. The E-30 is a new type of D-SLR that’s explicitly built for creative personal expression matched with professional quality and performance. It will become available mid-January 2009.

Creativity is yours for the taking
The Olympus E-30 not only reproduces images with amazing fidelity, it supports photographers in realising their artistic vision. Besides customary manual control options, this ground-breaking D-SLR gives users a wide range of additional choices to pursue their creativity. Six Art Filter functions on board facilitate image recording with distinct effects and lend each composition an individual sense of presence – all without additional extra lenses, filters or image processing on a computer. The filters’ effects can be previewed on the LCD during framing of the composition and include the following types: Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Colour, Light Tone, Grainy Film and Pin Hole. Other artistic effects can be attained via the Multiple Exposure mode. This allows several images to be superimposed on an image previously captured in RAW format directly in the camera, and is possible when shooting both in optical viewfinder mode or when using Live View. Wireless flash control is also incorporated for creative lighting requirements. This enables control over any number of compatible external flash units which can be placed anywhere around the subject – all without a single cable.

Expressive photography is further supported through the Multi-Aspect function. It provides a choice of nine aspect ratios, taking in standard 4:3, cinematic 16:9 and medium-format 6:6. This lets the photographer crop the scene according to his or her desired style.

Framing can be undertaken through a conventional viewfinder which offers an approx 98% field of view and approx 1.02x magnification (-1m-1, 50mm, at infinity). Or, for greater flexibility, compositions can be framed using the 2.7”/6.9cm HyperCrystal II LCD with 176° viewing angles. This offers complete framing freedom through its free-angle design which allows even the most adventurous perspectives to be captured. The effects of adjustments to settings can also be monitored in real time. Furthermore, thanks to improved high-speed contrast AF capabilities*, LCD depictions are extremely fast and faithful, making Live View framing significantly more comfortable than before. Views can be enlarged by a factor of 5x, 7x or 10x, enabling the photographer to close-in on subject details to check, for example, the focus.

Image quality par excellence
A newly-developed, 12.3 Megapixel Live MOS sensor guarantees the capture of all image details, right down to the smallest minutiae. Based on proven MOS signal amplification technologies, the sensor boasts low power consumption properties to enable fulltime Live View usage. The E-30’s new TruePic III+ image processor ensures ultra-high processing speeds together with professional image quality. This includes enhanced tonal gradation, colour fidelity and many possibilities for creative expression thanks to the Art Filters – while reducing image noise.

The E-30 further heightens results with built-in mechanical image stabilisation. Effective to an equivalent of up to 5 EV steps, the incidence of blur is dramatically diminished. Photographers profit from the flexibility of obtaining razor-sharp shots in a wider variety of situations – no matter if in darker shooting environments or at long focal lengths. And because the image stabilisation is built into the camera, every attached lens reaps the benefit.

Protection against the effects of dust is provided by the Supersonic Wave Filter. This technology was developed by Olympus and is deployed in every E-System model. It eliminates the risk of image blemishes caused by dust resulting from normal operation or particles entering the camera body during lens changes.

Up to speed
Inheriting the fully-biaxial 11-point AF system of the E-3 flagship model in the Olympus E-System range, the E-30 achieves the same breakneck autofocusing speeds and performance. Featuring both horizontal and vertical sensor lines, a total of 44 different data points are available in order to calculate the optimal focus. Furthermore, the AF sensor boasts an extremely wide detection range of -2 to 19 EV which ensures high-precision autofocusing even in low light, due to its houndstooth layout.

Photographers can also look forward to an accelerated experience in situations when every fraction of a second counts: up to 5fps can be recorded by the E-30 in full 12.3 Megapixel quality (with a 12 image RAW buffer in burst mode) for capturing fast-moving scenes. And for freezing high-speed action – or shooting in bright sunlight with the aperture wide open – this model enables shutter speeds as fast as 1/8000th sec. What’s more, flash synchronisation at up to 1/250th sec. further enhances its flexibility and artistic potential.

Picture-perfect ease
The E-30 incorporates additional features to improve photo results. Auto Gradation uses Shadow Adjustment Technology to help prevent blown highlights and blocked-in shadows as well as ensuring that even high-contrast subjects are naturally rendered. Meanwhile, the Face & Background Control function also adds Face Detection Technology to optimally balance foreground subjects and background scenery.

In addition, a Level Gauge is integrated in the E-30 to assist in framing and capturing shots evenly. Its built-in dual axis sensor detects roll and pitch levels, and the Level Gauge can be viewed on the Control Panel, the rear LCD and the viewfinder. Photographers can also compare the results of adjustments to various camera settings before shooting by using Perfect Shot Preview. It lets you view the effect of up to four different exposure compensation or white balance settings on the LCD prior to taking the picture.

Operating ease and superior visibility of camera settings are supported via a top-mounted LCD panel which displays the current shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation level and other important settings. Naturally, this and further information can also be viewed on the Super Control Panel which is displayed on the camera’s LCD and navigated via an intuitive, graphical menu.

Accessories to promote creativity
As part of the Olympus E-System and based on the Four Thirds Standard, many lenses and other accessories are available to ensure the E-30 takes creativity to a higher level. From fish-eye, macro and ultra-wide-angle lenses through to ultra-zoom models, the ZUIKO DIGITAL range of lenses leaves nothing to be desired. New in the line-up is the ZUIKO DIGITAL
14-54mm 1:2.8-3.5 II lens, which now enables full contrast AF performance with the E-30. Olympus also offers two wireless flash solutions: the FL-50R and FL-36R make the most of the camera’s wireless flash control capabilities. And for sessions that go into overtime, the HLD-4 Power Battery Holder – which includes a handy shutter release button – ensures shooting can continue for extended periods without the need to recharge.

The Olympus E-30 gives photographers a portable creative studio. It provides everything required to live out and express creativity while enjoying pro-level image results, control and performance. It will go on sale from mid-January 2009.

The Olympus E-30 digital SLR – main features:

Creativity
• Art Filters, Multiple Exposure, Wireless Flash, Multi-Aspect
• Comfortable Live View thanks to high-speed contrast AF
• Free-angle 2.7”/6.9cm HyperCrystal II LCD
Image Quality
• Newly developed 12.3 Megapixel Live MOS Sensor
• TruePic III+ processor for ideal colour reproduction and low noise
• Built-in IS with max. 5 EV steps efficiency
Speed
• High-speed 11-point fully-biaxial AF performance
• Max. 5fps
• 1/8000th sec. high speed shutter & 1/250th sec. flash synchronisation

Additional features of the Olympus E-30:
• Multiple-exposure function with LCD monitor display of current view superimposed on top of previously captured image
• Auto gradation adjustment to prevent blown highlights and blocked-in shadows
• Face & Background Control for beautifully balanced exposures of foreground subjects and background scenery
• Perfect Shot Preview to enable comparison of the results of various settings adjustments before actual shooting
• Reliable Supersonic Wave Filter dust reduction system
• Built-in flash (GN13) with commander function for wireless off-camera flash synchronisation
• Wireless flash control in up to 3 groups (separate press release available for Olympus FL-50R and FL-36R flash units)
• Large optical viewfinder with approx 98% field of view and approx 1.02x magnification
• Shooting information displayed via top-mounted LCD panel and Super Control Panel LCD monitor display for superior visibility and operating ease
• High-precision, 49-zone metering system
• Easy activation of shooting functions via sample image selection
• Versatile bracketing functions for ISO, white balance, exposure, and flash
• Lightbox view with enlargement function for easy side-by-side comparison of images
• Based on the Four Thirds Standard
• Ergonomic design of body, control buttons and GUI for easy operation
• AE/AF lock functionality for individual customisation
• Second display for Super Control Panel
• ISO 100-3200 for wide-ranging sensitivity
• Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interface
• High-speed data writing and lossless RAW compression for quick processing
• Simultaneous writing of RAW and JPEG
• 27 shooting modes (5 Exposure Modes, 5 Creative Modes, 11 Scene Select Modes, 6 Art Filters)
• Wide dynamic range in highly lit areas
• Dual memory slot for CompactFlash and xD-Picture Cards (incl. support for UDMA High-Speed CF cards and Microdrive)

The Olympus E-30 is available in the following configurations:
• Olympus E-30 body only
• E-30 body with ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-60mm 1:2.8-4.0 lens
• E-30 body with ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-54mm 1:2.8-3.5 II lens
• E-30 body with ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 lens

* Full contrast AF performance is available with new Olympus lenses including the
ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm 1:4.0-5.6, the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6, the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm 1:4.0-5.6, the ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm 1:2.8 “pancake” lens and the new ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-54mm 1:2.8-3.5 II.

For questions or additional information, please contact:

Julia Rauther
Olympus Europa Holding GmbH
Tel.: +49-40-237 73-4258
Email: julia.rauther@olympus-europa.com

Appendix

Art Filters
Enables special artistic effects to be created directly in the camera. The following Art Filters are available in the Olympus E-30:
Pop Art: Enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid to create high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
Soft Focus: Creates a soft tone which gives pictures an ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere. It renders pictures as though they were veiled in heavenly light, without obscuring details such as the hair or flower petals.
Pale & Light Colour: The foreground is enclosed in flat, gentle light – similar to a flashback scene in a film – creating a sense of déjà vu.
Light Tone: Creates a picture with a gentle feel to it, similar to one taken under artificial lighting. Both the shade and highlight areas are rendered very softly to provide a sophisticated atmosphere.
Grainy Film: This effect recreates the feeling of reality evoked by grainy, high-contrast monochrome pictures. The strong presence and dramatic atmosphere make the subject stand out impressively.
Pin Hole: Reduces the peripheral brightness like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.

Built-in image stabiliser
A type of image stabiliser that is built directly into the camera. This enables the photo-enhancing effects of image stabilisation to be enjoyed irrespective of the attached lens. In Olympus E-System cameras with built-in image stabilisation, a gyro sensor detects the precise direction of the shake. Using the on-board SWD, the shake is then compensated for by shifting the image sensor according to the movement data. For quick response at long focal lengths, cameras are equipped with two dedicated microprocessors: one to control the two supersonic motors that shift the unit vertically and horizontally, and one to provide high-precision control.

Face Detection Technology
A technology that searches for faces in a composition and recognises them as the main subject. It then automatically puts them in focus and optimally adjusts exposure to create an image that’s sharp in the right places and ideally exposed.

High Speed Live MOS Sensor
A high-performance image sensor that enables Live View capabilities and fast sequential shooting for D-SLR cameras. It combines the advanced specifications of a Full Frame Transfer (FFT) CCD with the low power requirement of a CMOS. Photodiodes are deeply embedded in the sensor to suppress image noise. The faithful reproduction of subject details with rich tones and natural, vibrant colours characterise this type of sensor.

HyperCrystal
A high-grade, fully-transmissive technology used in LCDs, which employs an additional layer at the bottom of the LCD to reflect light from external light sources. This enhances the brightness of the LCD, so even in direct sunlight images are displayed sharply and with improved contrast compared to that of conventional displays. Also, it provides for particularly wide viewing angles without glare or shadow, so images can be framed from a variety of angles and viewed by several people at once.

Level Gauge
The Level Gauge functions like a level used in construction – it helps ensure that pictures are straight and even. The built-in dual axis sensor detects the levels in roll and pitch. The level gauge is displayed in the viewfinder, on the Control Panel, and on the rear LCD.

Live View
Provides an alternative to framing shots through the viewfinder on a digital SLR camera. The image sent through the lens to the image sensor is displayed directly on the camera’s LCD. Whereas most compact digital cameras have been equipped with Live View functionality for many years, this feature has only recently become available on D-SLRs. The world’s first D-SLR to feature continuous Live View capabilities was the Olympus E-330.

Multi Aspect
The E-30 lets photographers choose from nine different aspect ratios that enable individualised framing of scenes. These provide a new means of adding expression to shots and the selected ratio can be seen directly on the camera’s LCD. The available aspect ratios include: 16:9, 3:2, 7:5, 4:3, 5:4, 6:5, 7:6, 3:4 and 6:6.

Multi Exposure
Multiple exposures are possible with the E-30 in both Live View and viewfinder shooting. In Live View shooting, previously shot RAW data is used as the base image and the final photo can be monitored by overlapping the image to be added on the LCD. PRESS INFORMATION
Joint update service for Four Thirds lenses launched

Hamburg, 15 October 2008 – Olympus Imaging Corporation (hereinafter "Olympus"), Panasonic Corporation (hereinafter "Panasonic") and Sigma Corporation (hereinafter "Sigma") have joined forces to launch an online firmware update service that will enable users to easily update the firmware in interchangeable D-SLR lenses compliant with the Four Thirds System Standard, even when the camera and lens are not made by the same manufacturer. Scheduled to start on 15 October 2008, this new joint service is the first of its kind in the industry*.

The way it works is simple: after mounting the lens on the camera, the user can go online and update the lens firmware by downloading the latest lens firmware. Previously, lens firmware could only be updated when the lens was mounted on a camera made by the same manufacturer – for example, an Olympus lens on an Olympus camera or a Panasonic lens on a Panasonic camera. If the mounted lens was not made by the same manufacturer as the camera, then the lens firmware could not be updated regardless of whether or not the mounted lens is compliant with the Four Thirds System Standard.

This new service makes it possible to update the firmware of a Panasonic lens on an Olympus camera or vice versa. Similarly, the firmware in a Sigma lens can also be updated on either an Olympus or Panasonic camera. For more details, please click on one of the following links. As such, high quality miniaturised optics that deliver maximum D-SLR brilliance can be taken along and enjoyed anywhere with ease. The included hand-made leather case and strap, featuring a fashionable retro design completes the ensemble magnificently. Hamburg, 16.06.2008 – The flexibility of the range of light emitting diode (LED) fluorescence light sources for microscopy has been enhanced with exclusive advancements to the precisExcite® and FluoLED product series, available from Olympus. As a result, the LED light source range offers a new level of functionality and the right illumination solution for all life science fluorescence applications: From entry level single colour units to advanced high-speed multi-colour systems.
precisExcite
LED technology has proven to be an excellent alternative source of fluorescence illumination for microscopy and offers significant benefits over conventional lighting. The precisExcite represents the very latest in reflective fluorescence excitation for upright and inverted microscopes, with specially developed LED Array Modules (LAMs) as the source of illumination. The precisExcite illumination system features peltier cooling of the LAM modules. The cooling ensures highest excitation intensity, extreme stability over entire LAM lifetime with very little drop in intensity for repeatability of experiments even after years of LAM usage and completely stable illumination conditions in short- and long-time lapse experiments for best data fidelity. The precisExcite has now extended its flexibility with the introduction of four new LAMs to the portfolio of eleven mono LED array modules. These include the unique 490 nm, which is important for the fluorescence detection of the most popular fluorophore FITC, as well as 535, 565 and 585 nm LAM wavelengths. These enable it to attain intensities not possible on other LED-based fluorescence excitation systems providing peerless fluorescence microscopy with excellent capabilities for all applications. Furthermore, the LAMs are easily interchangeable and permits up to three different wavelengths to be used at once. This enables the user to select wavelengths quickly and effortlessly, and also allows for a more convenient workflow, saving valuable time when compared to mechanical wavelength switches using filter turrets or filter wheels. In addition, for a more integrated system, the precisExcite can now be fully controlled via the Olympus cell^A to cell^P software programmes, extending its functionality further still.

FluoLED
The FluoLED series is a perfect entry-level fluorescence system for educational and routine use, available in three versions to match different user needs: the FluoLED EasyBlue provides a single wavelength (480 nm) for the most cost efficient solution; the FluoLED Single provides users with the capability to use one of seven interchangeable LED cassettes from 365 nm (UV) to 630 nm (red); and the FluoLED Multifluo enables up to three of the LED cassettes to be installed and controlled at once via a three channel elctronic driver. Each model is specifically designed to fit directly to Olympus CX microscopes, and enables transmitted fluorescence observations of transparent specimens, such as bacteria and thin sections, without removing the ability to perform brightfield illumination. Broadening this application area is the ability to power LEDs by battery or solar power, ensuring that fluorescence microscopy can be conducted ‘in field’ where samples are fresh. The addition of the new FluoLED Single for the Olympus BX41 microscope now extends the FluoLED product range to clinical applications as well.

Please contact:
OLYMPUS LIFE SCIENCE EUROPA GMBH
Microscopy
Esther Ahrent
Department Manager Marketing Communication
Tel: +49 40 2 37 73 - 5426
Fax: +49 40 2 37 73 - 4647
E-mail: microscopy@olympus-europa.com
www.microscopy.olympus.eu

Olympus has introduced its OLS3000IR LEXT IR confocal laser scanning microscope – the latest member of its near-IR silicon inspection microscope range. Designed for the non-destructive, high resolution observation of the interior of silicon wafers, IC chips, MEMS and other devices, the LEXT IR uses a 1310 nm laser to literally see through the silicon to the components.
Packaging technology of semiconductor devices is rapidly advancing along with the increase in the need for thinner and smaller electronics devices. This makes observation for research or quality control almost impossible, with many components and even circuits packed into a tight space. Joining the Olympus MX (inverted) and BX2M and BXFM (upright) silicon imaging systems, the LEXT OLS3000IR uses an infrared laser to illuminate features that cannot be seen visually - such as SIP (System in Package), 3-dimensional mounting, and CSP (Chip Scale Package) - to be inspected, measured and analysed without any destructive preparation.

The LEXT platform was first developed for advanced metrology and surface analysis using a UV laser. With an IR laser the LEXT OLS3000IR is perfect for silicon device inspection, providing fast, efficient and as easy-to-use capabilities for ultra-fine subsurface resolution with SEM-like clarity for a wide range of imaging tasks:

Flip chip mounting defect analysis
In flip chip bonding, once mounted the pattern cannot be inspected using visible light. However, the silicon chip is transparent to infrared light and the interior can be observed without destroying the mounted chip. Defect analysis is easily performed by merely placing the device under the LEXT OLS3100IR.

Chip damage analysis
With the LEXT OLS3100IR, device changes during heat and moisture tests can be inspected non-destructively. Fore example, leakage due to melting and corrosion of copper wiring, peeling of resin parts, etc. can all be clearly observed.

Chip gap measurement
Three-dimensional mounting chip gap can be measured as the movement of the objective when infrared light is passed through the silicon then focused on the chip and interposer. This method can also be used in the measurement of key features in micro-electromechanial systems (MEMS).

A World leading IR Team
As well as the peerless LEXT OLS3000IR, the Olympus IR microscope system range provides non-destructive inspection capabilities for all silicon-based circuits, whatever the requirements. The inverted MX series is perfect for the observation of 150-200 mm wafers. The upright BX2M microscopes offer transmitted illumination and the BXFM is equipment oriented modular optical unit enabling it to be integrated into other pieces of equipment, such as production lines for in situ inspection.

Please contact:
OLYMPUS LIFE SCIENCE EUROPA GMBH
Microscopy
Esther Ahrent
Department Manager Marketing Communication
Tel: +49 40 2 37 73 - 5426
Fax: +49 40 2 37 73 - 4647
E-mail: microscopy@olympus-europa.com
http://www.microscopy.olympus.eu

PRESS INFORMATION
Make the most of every opportunity

Hamburg, 13 May 2008 – The perfect moment doesn’t wait. That’s why serious photographers need serious equipment so that they are ready for whatever comes. With its pro features and top image quality, the new Olympus E-520 D-SLR fits the bill perfectly. The next evolution to the EISA Award-winning E-500 series incorporates a built-in image stabiliser to ensure blur-free shots irrespective of the lens attached – no matter if wide-angle or ultra-tele and without the need for a tripod. Matched with the Supersonic Wave Filter dust protection system and improved Live View capabilities, the freedom to frame and take great, crystal-clear photos is virtually limitless. Based upon the forward-looking “designed for digital” Four Thirds Standard, the 10.0 Megapixel E-520 with Live View ensures uncompromising D-SLR quality. It will become available in June 2008.

Flexibility is the name of the game
The E-520 relegates blurred photos to a thing of the past. Its built-in image stabiliser ensures subjects are captured in ultimate sharpness, shot after shot – no matter if shooting from the back of a motorbike on rough terrain or capturing a spontaneous “stolen moment” out of the hand in a market square. Because the stabiliser is located in the camera body and not in individual lenses, photographers can shoot with confidence regardless of which lens is attached: from wide-angle models like the soon-to-be-released ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm 1:4.0-5.6 to high-performance zooms such as the new ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 70-300mm 1:4.0-5.6 (equiv. to 140-600mm in a 35mm format).

Sequential shooting at 3.5fps with up to eight images in RAW buffer lets every moment be captured. Matched with fast processing speeds and the exceptionally low noise performance that’s attributable to the TruePic III image processor, high-speed action becomes your friend. Broad-ranging sensitivity from ISO 100-1600 adds versatility, and the bracketing function let series of shots to be taken with varying adjustments to exposure, focus or white balance, allowing the best of the shots to be selected.

For low-light shooting situations photographers can select the built-in flash or choose an optional external unit. Wireless flash control is also possible with this model, making customised lighting set ups an easy reality.

As with all cameras in the Olympus E-System line-up, the E-520 incorporates the Supersonic Wave Filter to protect against the effects of dust, which can enter the camera during lens changes or otherwise result from normal operation. Photographers therefore enjoy blemish-free pictures at all times.

Complex features – designed for easy usage
Despite being the powerhouse it is, the Four Thirds System-based E-520 remains a pleasure to use. Its ergonomic body houses the capabilities that not only advance image quality but also enrich the complete photo-taking experience. Live View has been enhanced to boost user friendliness. In addition to allowing depth of field previews, providing the facility to control exposure compensation and white balance on-screen, and being able to see the effects of Face Detection and Shadow Adjustment Technology in real time on the 6.9cm/2.7” HyperCrystal II LCD, autofocus changes can now also be seen directly on the display. This has been made possible by implementing a contrast AF system* in addition to the customary phase difference detection AF system, which means that the mirror needn’t move to the down position for AF measurements to be made and previewed in Live View.

The LCD boasts viewing angles of 176° and has a field of view that covers 100% of the frame. Live View is also ideal to support the needs of macro photographers wishing to focus visually, as sections of the subject can be enlarged by a factor 7 or 10 to aid manual focus adjustments.

The E-520 includes a total of 32 consumer-friendly shooting modes to make shooting easy no matter the situation: whether at a candlelight dinner, taking a portrait or shooting under water. Operability is a cinch too: users can choose on-screen menus in up to 10 languages – and many more are also available for download. A long-life rechargeable battery ensures extended shooting. Dual CompactFlash and xD-Picture Card slots enable excellent storage flexibility, and the downloading of files is fast thanks to USB Hi-Speed 2.0.

A complete system for photographic creativity
As part of the Olympus E-System, the E-520 is compatible with virtually all system accessories. This embraces numerous flash units including the wireless FL-36R and FL-50R to take advantage of the camera’s remote flash control capabilities. More than 20 ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses – all featuring near telecentric construction – are available, covering a focal length range of 14-600mm (35mm equivalents). Among the latest ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses are the ED 9-18mm 1:4.0-5.6 (18-36mm), ED 14-35mm 1:2.0 SWD (28-70mm), ED 70-300mm 1:4.0-5.6 (140-600mm), and 25mm 1:2.8 (50mm) Pancake lens.

HyperCrystal
A high-grade, fully-transmissive technology used in LCDs, which employs an additional layer at the bottom of the LCD to reflect light from external light sources. This enhances the brightness of the LCD, so even in direct sunlight images are displayed sharply and improved contrast compared to that of conventional displays. Also, it provides for particularly wide viewing angles without glare or shadow, so images can be framed from a variety of angles and viewed by several people at once.

RC Wireless Flash Control
The user can control wireless flash units remotely – eliminating the need for extra cables – by using the built-in flash as the system’s master unit. Control options include the ability to independently regulate flash mode and compensation settings for up to three groups of flashes, four channel settings to avoid interference as well as a wide range of brightness levels.

Shadow Adjustment Technology
A technology designed to improve exposure for pictures with dark areas. Using a sensor that works much like the human eye, dark parts of a composition (e.g. a shadow under a tree) are identified and the camera then adjusts the exposure settings accordingly for those areas. The result is a more realistic and detailed picture.

Supersonic Wave Filter
Dust entering digital SLRs, for example during lens changes, can cause damage to photos – unless it is removed. With the Supersonic Wave Filter, the potential for dust to ruin photos is eliminated. A transparent filter is located between the camera’s shutter and sensor. It makes sure no dust is able to land on the sensor. Instead, the particles settle on the filter and are then shaken off by a series of ultrasonic vibrations generated by the filter when activated. Olympus was the first manufacturer to incorporate dust protection in D-SLRs.

TruePic III image processor
Olympus’ latest-generation image processing engine. It automatically enhances important aspects of image quality including: Colour reproduction (colour range, saturation and brightness), picture sharpness (reduced image noise, improved edge reproduction), as well as providing faster processing speeds.

PRESS INFORMATION
Luminoview LV200: A quantum leap in live cell imaging

Munich, 31. 03.2008 – Olympus has introduced the LV200 Luminoview Bio-luminescence microscope (BLM) to its advanced live cell imaging range. The LV200 is a quantum leap in luminescence microscopy and features a highly specialised optical design to maximise light collection, enable dual-colour luminescence, as well as provide brightfield and fluorescence overlays. The first commercially available luminescent microscope, the LV200 boasts full environmental control for long term live cell imaging, providing unprecedented sensitivity and resolution whatever the magnification. The Olympus LV200 Luminoview provides peerless bio-luminescence microscopy imaging for small organisms and slice cultures as well as at the single cell scale.

Bio-Luminescence imaging has great advantages over fluorescence imaging since it combines a high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio with no background luminescence or phototoxic effects. What is more, only viable cells emit luminescence signals, and measurements are absolute and directly quantitative. However, in microscopy, luminescent light is not as bright as fluorescence, and has therefore required expensive and often complex imaging systems - until now. The LV200 Luminoview has been carefully designed using Olympus’s expert knowledge of the optical and experimental requirements for live cell bio-luminescence microscopy (BML):

Unique optics
The optics of the LV200 are designed to provide the straightest path and shortest distance between the object and the camera, to ensure that as much light as possible reaches the CCD chip. Therefore there are no additional mirrors, filters or lenses to absorb the low levels of light that are emitted through bio-luminescence. Furthermore, the extremely high N.A. of the tube lens affords a vast increase in sensitivity compared to a conventional microscope system.
The LV200 optics produce signal outputs many times higher than traditional systems and therefore uses a conventional CCD or EM-CCD camera. In addition, the LV200 has integrated excitation and emission filter wheels to enable dual-colour luminescence and transmission fluorescence. These unique optical properties also ensure that high magnification objectives can be used, with suitable camera integration times, to provide exquisite single cell resolution not previously possible with luminescence imaging.

Excellent Features
With the optics providing the perfect imaging capabilities, the LV200 is fitted with a fully controllable environment to enable long term live cell imaging. This includes independent temperature control for the stage, incubation chamber, top cover and objective. This fine environmental control enables samples to be continuously monitored over days or even weeks, without the need to move the sample between the microscope and an incubator. The box is incredibly ‘light tight’ so can be used in a standard laboratory, only requiring a darkroom if light emission from the sample is extremely low.

Superior Software
The LV200 is fully integrated with the Olympus cell^M imaging and analysis software. The advanced cell^M software enables users to precisely control experimental and camera settings, as well as capture and analyse the resultant images and time series.
Example applications
Long term, quantitative analysis of gene expression in living cells with high S/N ratio and high spatial resolution - chronobiology, developmental biology, neurobiology and gene regulation
Ca2+ imaging for sensitive cells, long term observations and large fields of view - neurobiology, physiology and signalling research
ATP, and ATP-coupled measurements, with high spatial resolution in single cells and extracellular matrix - neurobiology, physiology, signalling, metabolic imagining and GPCR assays research
Imaging of samples with high autofluorescence - plant cell biology and embryology
Imaging of active bacteria and micro-organisms - microbiology, food technology and parasitology
The Olympus LV200 Luminoview is a groundbreaking microscope system that has the potential to greatly advance our understanding of a number of different life science and medical topics.

Please contact:
OLYMPUS LIFE SCIENCE EUROPA GMBH
Microscopy
Esther Ahrent
Department Manager Marketing Communication
Tel: +49 40 2 37 73 - 5426
Fax: +49 40 2 37 73 - 4647
E-mail: microscopy@olympus-europa.com
http://www.microscopy.olympus.eu/

PRESS INFORMATION
Big on ease of use and performance, small in size

Hamburg, 5 March 2008 – The latest addition to the Olympus E-System, the E-420, represents a winning formula for both seasoned photographers and entrants to the D-SLR domain alike. Users benefit from the remarkable quality only D-SLR photography can deliver, yet also enjoy the ease of use usually only associated with a compact camera. This includes Live View depictions on the LCD, which can significantly simplify image composition. In addition, as one of the world’s smallest and lightest D-SLRs, mobility is hardly an issue. The E-420 will fit just about anywhere – from a small daypack to a lady’s handbag. This makes it a perfect companion for journalists, travellers or other adventurers who appreciate the one-of-a-kind portability, performance and value for money it delivers. The easy-to-use 10.0 Megapixel E-420 features 28 shooting modes to suit a multitude of photographic situations and is ready to use straight out of the box. It will be available in stores from late April 2008.

More performance, more ease of use
With the E-420, Olympus proves that high performance D-SLR photography can be enjoyed by everyone. Despite packing even more potential than its predecessor, this new E-System model boasts extreme user-friendliness in an amazingly light and compact take-anywhere form. Whatever the photographer's level of experience, high-quality images are quite literally for the taking. 28 shooting modes, including automatic, semi-automatic and manual shooting options, ensure complete versatility – while retaining both ease of use and the distinct D-SLR quality advantages.

A powerful 10.0 Megapixel Live MOS sensor provides plentiful resolution for crisp, detailed shots. This is supported by the incorporation of the TruePic III image processor which enables the implementation of Shadow Adjustment Technology (SAT). It guarantees exceptionally true-to-life image reproduction while reducing noise and enhancing processing speed. Sequential shooting at up to 3.5fps in full Megapixel mode is possible with up to eight images in RAW buffer.

For state-of-the-art protection against the threat of dust, Olympus’ own Supersonic Wave Filter is the E-System’s native dust reduction system – and has positioned itself as the world’s leading solution against dust on the image sensor.

Purely intuitive
The E-420 brings even the most advanced features into a natural framework that enables virtually anyone to achieve high-level photography. With continuous Live View, users can frame compositions on the camera's generous 2.7”/6.9cm HyperCrystal II LCD, which provides 100% coverage of scenes with the on-screen contrast, brightness and colour of depictions all being easily adjustable. Thanks to Perfect Shot Preview, the effects of exposure compensation and white balance can also be monitored in real-time directly on the LCD. Furthermore, professional depth of field previewing is possible and users can see the effects of Face Detection and Shadow Adjustment Technology in action. In addition, the LCD enables the magnification of subjects by a factor of 7 or 10 while framing. This makes manual focusing during macro shooting, for example, considerably easier and more accurate.

Autofocus performance has also been enhanced to boost user friendliness. On top of the phase detection AF system, the E-420 now also features a contrast AF system*. It allows subjects to be focused upon more conveniently as the mirror does not need to move to the down position for measurements to be taken. And as a major additional benefit for photographers, implementation of the contrast AF system lets the effect of autofocus be seen on the Live View LCD immediately.

A built-in flash adds to this model’s flexibility. More shooting versatility is also provided due to the option of wireless flash control in up to three groups. Using the Olympus FL-36R and FL-50R flash units, multiple flash set-ups which can be controlled remotely – significantly extend lighting options. And thanks to the availability of sensitivities ranging from ISO 100 to 1600, the E-420 remains a versatile companion, even in less-than-perfect lighting conditions and in situations when a flash is not desired.

With 38 languages available, the E-420 enables ease-of-use no matter the user's native tongue. A USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) interface guarantees fast data transfer, and with its long-life rechargeable battery, shooting sessions can easily go into overtime.

Part of the E-System family
The E-420 is compatible with virtually all Olympus E-System accessories. Adhering to the Four Thirds Standard, these various accessories open the door to an amazing range of photographic options – without compromising quality. All Four Thirds lenses, for example, feature near-telecentric construction ensuring edge-to-edge sharpness. Furthermore, the Four Thirds System enables the design of smaller camera bodies and lenses to allow for much more compact photographic set-ups. This advantage is perfectly embodied in the go-anywhere E-420, one of the world’s smallest and lightest D-SLRs. And to accentuate this fact further, a new so-called pancake lens is also being introduced. Featuring an extremely short-barrelled, lightweight design, the ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm 1:2.8 (equivalent to 50mm on a 35mm camera) represents the perfect accompaniment for the E-420. With its overall compactness, the set-up is reminiscent of the legendary improvement to mobility that the famous Olympus OM series provided.

Adding to this model’s cool elegance, an attractive, retro-styled camera case that attaches to the base of the camera is also being introduced. Made entirely of leather, it will be available in a choice of white, brown or black.

The newest addition to the E-System family, the E-420 will hit stores from late April 2008.

The Olympus E-420 digital SLR – main features:

• Extremely easy operation – use it straight out of the box
• One of the world’s smallest and lightest D-SLRs providing the ultimate in portability
• 10 Megapixel Live MOS sensor
• Live View for easier compositions
• Perfect Shot Preview for improved depiction of camera adjustments directly on the Live View LCD
• Improved Live View with contrast AF, Face Detection, Shadow Adjustment Technology & phase detection AF system*
• TruePic III image processor
• High-contrast 2.7”/6.9cm HyperCrystal II LCD with 176° viewing angles
• The original Supersonic Wave Filter for dust protection
• 28 automatic, semi-automatic and manual shooting options (including 5 exposure, 5 creative & 18 scene select modes)
• Built-in pop-up flash (GN 10)
• Wireless flash control in up to 3 groups
• 3.5fps with up to eight images in RAW buffer
• One-touch white balance
• AE/AF-lock functionality
• ISO 100 to 1600
• Depth of field preview function
• 49-segment digital ESP
• Bracketing function (Exposure, White Balance, Focus)
• Beginner and Advanced information screens
• Detailed info screen with histogram
• Based on Four Thirds System
• Dual memory card slots (for xD-Picture Card and CompactFlash)

The Olympus E-420 is available in the following configurations:

• Olympus E-420 Lens Kit
(E-420 body with ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 lens)
• Olympus E-420 Double Zoom Kit
(E-420 body with ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 and ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm 1:4.0-5.6 lenses)
• Olympus E-420 Pancake Lens Kit
(E-420 body with ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm 1:2.8 lens)
• Olympus E-420 (body only)

* Full contrast AF performance is available with new Olympus lenses including the ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6, the ZUIKO DIGITAL 40-150mm 1:4.0-5.6, and the new ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm 1:2.8 “pancake” lens. It then automatically puts them in focus and optimally adjusts exposure to create an image that’s sharp in the right places and ideally exposed.

Despite a five-year hiatus to study classical music, the Romanian finally returned to his work in visual arts, developing his traditional skills as well as dabbling in graffiti and web design. It wasn’t until a friend showed him a book containing digital illustrations, however, that he really found his calling. Today, the artist’s thoughtful and intricate works boast the ability to convey chaos and order, energy and serenity all in a single piece – which explains the freestyle artist’s appeal to such a wide range of audiences. “The opportunity to design these camera skins was an interesting prospect for me. With photography being an exciting art form in its own right and a major component of today’s digital art, I was fascinated by the idea of designing pieces where the ‘canvas’ would ultimately be an instrument that can be used to create art itself”, explains Apostolescu. PRESS INFORMATION
100th OLA2500 installed in Germany

Hamburg, 04.03.2008 – Just four years after being launched, Olympus has installed its 100th OLA2500 system for the automation of pre and post analytical processes at the Medizinischen Laboratorium Kyritz. Installed in January, the 100th system has already been responsible for improving workflow efficiency and demonstrates the breakthrough Olympus has made in the lab automation market in Germany.

As is the case throughout the healthcare community, laboratories today require intelligent solutions to successfully combat rising costs. With its diverse automation capabilities, the OLA2500 boasts just such savings potential. One example is in the system’s ability to manage standard processes such as the decapping, aliquoting, barcoding, sorting and sealing of test tubes, saving valuable time, money and energy.
One of the companies taking advantage of the benefits offered by the OLA2500 is the Medizinischen Laboratorium Kyritz (Kyritz Medical Laboratory or MLK) in the northeast German state of Brandenburg, where since the end of January, numerous tasks have been handed over and entrusted to automated lab management. For Olympus, this implementation is an important milestone: “With the 100th installation of an OLA2500 in Germany, we’ve crossed a magic threshold. Just four years after the system’s introduction, we’re able to declare successful penetration in the lab automation market in Germany”, says Thorsten Laubert, Product Manager, Lab Automation.

One million test tubes a year
Around 2,500 test tubes are analysed at MLK every day. That amounts to roughly one million test tubes a year which previously required labour-intensive management prior to and following analysis. “Since the end of January, the OLA2500 has completed these tasks automatically. The time we’ve saved as a result can now be used much more effectively”, adds Dr Manfred Haßfeld, founder and head of MLK. “What’s more, samples can now be localised much more quickly, while automatic barcoding rules out any chance of a mix up. The system even helps with archiving. In short, the OLA2500 has been a fantastic investment”.

MLK is a partner of the Laborgemeinschaft Ostprignitz-Ruppin (Ostprignitz-Ruppin Association of Laboratories), a member of the Labordiagnostischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Diagnostik und Rationalisierung (Lab diagnostics Consortium for Diagnostics and Rationalisation or LADR) and has been certified since 1997 – currently in accordance with DIN EN ISO 15189. A total of 65 employees support about 250 privately practising doctors, four emergency hospitals and four rehabilitation clinics throughout greater Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt, providing external medical laboratory diagnostics services.

Please contact:
OLYMPUS LIFE SCIENCE EUROPA GMBH
Diagnostics
Esther Ahrent
Department Manager Marketing Communication
Tel: +49 40 2 37 73 - 5426
Fax: +49 40 2 37 73 - 4647
E-mail: diagnostics@olympus-europa.com
www.olympus-europa.com

With the EndoALPHA endoscopic control system, Olympus supplies a solution that meets the demand for total OR (Operating Room) integration by facilitating the optimal planning of procedures in the operating theatre. Operation and monitoring of all appliances connected to the EndoALPHA system is managed via a central control unit.

Profitable growth in the Endoscopy division was sustained over the 2006/2007 financial year, with turnover up 12% to 572.5 million euros.

Olympus Life Science Europa GmbH
Merging the fields of microscopy and diagnostics, this company covers a wide scope of needs ranging from microscope systems for life and materials science, to high-performance analytical systems and reagents for clinical laboratories.

Life Science – Microscopy
The Olympus microscopy product line-up satisfies all aspects of the market: from high-end research systems for science to equipment for routine material inspections. In addition, the company produces tailored, innovative and comprehensive solutions in which the microscope is integrated as one component of a whole system. Processes in living cells can only be accurately visualised and analysed when a research microscope is integrated with a number of different peripheral devices to produce a complete software-controlled imaging solution. To this end, the Olympus Competency Centres in Munich and Munster (Germany) develop custom software and hardware solutions for microscopic imaging, ensuring optimal interaction between all of the components required in such a complex system. In addition, Olympus offers comprehensive service and support to users and researchers at all times. Despite a challenging competitive environment, the microscopy business area performed well in the 2006/2007 financial year, with turnover up 13% to 121.8 million euros in comparison to the previous year.

Life Science – Diagnostics
For over 30 years, Olympus has served as an innovative partner for routine and emergency labs, major private labs and blood donation services with its cost-effective analytical systems for clinical laboratories. Today, the company is one of the leading system providers, with a broad range of analysis solutions and a steadily rising market share. This success is mainly due to the flexible, expandable and, above all, standardised platform concept for clinical chemistry. It combines high result-validity with an optimum workflow and a growing range of selectable parameters. In view of the growing pressure on costs in the healthcare system, only scaleable solutions, as supplied by the AU and OLA2500 product families, are able to completely meet these demands. Added to this is the all-round service, from advance planning support to on-the-spot technical help designed to increase efficiency. Olympus’ overall strategy is to become a provider of comprehensive medical laboratory solutions. For this reason, Olympus entered the immunoassay market in the summer of 2006 with a new system comprising the AU3000i analyser and heterogeneous assays. In a market characterised by marginal growth and a continuing wave of consolidation, the Olympus Diagnostics Division succeeded in sustaining positive performance in the 2006/2007 financial year, with sales rising 4% to 179.2 million euros.

Olympus Life Science Research GmbH
The new global Olympus Life Science competence centre in Munich combines research, development and production in the areas of In-Vitro Diagnostics, Laboratory Automation and Molecular Biology with elements of Digital Image Processing and Microscopy. These divisions now exist together under one integrated and state-of-the-art creative and scientific facility. The close collaboration of highly-skilled employees from various specialist divisions creates an interdisciplinary work atmosphere and deep knowledge pool that will benefit all product lines. The project represents an investment of around 15 million euros for Olympus’ European headquarters. The number of employees at the centre is expected to rise from an initial 350, to 450 in 2009.

The Olympus Lab Automation Group develops and manufactures the OLA2500 – the most successful front-end laboratory automation system currently on the market. This system adapts to changes in global requirements by providing appropriate solutions through the use of different expansion modules. The broad spectrum of applications for Olympus’ innovative technologies and systems in the field of Molecular Biology has the potential to create new business and generate further growth through the development of new products.

All Olympus In-Vitro Diagnostics reagents for global demand in the area of clinical chemistry and immunochemistry are developed and produced in Olympus Life Science Research GmbH’s laboratories in Ireland.

Olympus Europa Holding GmbH
Olympus Europa Holding GmbH is the parent company of Olympus’ European subsidiaries and also provides these with services in the areas of Finance, Human Resources/General Affairs, IT, Logistics and Corporate Communications. Olympus adds Advanced Optigrid M Illumination System to Life Science Microscopy Range
Germany
Frankfurt
Olympus has announced the addition of the new Optigrid M structured illumination system to its life science microscopy range. Optigrid M yields ultra-rich, multi-channel fluorescence and 3D/4D imaging.
/corporate/1696_1766.htm
PRESS INFORMATION

Highly precise structured illumination system provides outstanding fluorescence images with confocal quality.

Hamburg, 18.02.2008 – Olympus has announced the addition of the new Optigrid M structured illumination system to its life science microscopy range. Optigrid M yields ultra-rich, multi-channel fluorescence and 3D/4D imaging, whilst still using standard illumination. Compatible with Olympus BX2 and IX2 microscopes, Optigrid M controls are fully integrated into Olympus cell* imaging software to provide all users with excellent confocal-like images.

Utilising the light emitted from an existing stabilised illumination source, the Optigrid M uses a one-dimensional optical grid mounted on a piezo-electronically driven actuator to project a line pattern onto the specimen.

The grid is then moved perpendicularly to the grid lines, in 1/3 steps of its period length so that three grid movements result in one optical section.
The structured illumination process returns a strong signal wherever focus is sharp and a weak signal where focus is soft. Furthermore, a patented algorithm is used to combine these strong signals from the grid images so that each optical section contains data that is exactly within the focal plane.

A series of optical sections taken through a sample (z-stack) can then be combined to create a haze-free ultra-sharp composite image. Image stacks can also be used to produce 3D reconstructions using post processing software.

The Optigrid M slider is inserted into the field diaphragm slot of a standard illuminator on both upright (BX2) and inverted (IX2) Olympus microscopes. This enables it to be used with any of the wavelengths available from the illumination system from UV to IR and also to be easily removed for standard microscope functions. The Optigrid M is fully controlled using Olympus cell* software via a USB connection, which also ensures simple system integration. Furthermore, it provides users with excellent imaging throughput and programmable experiment repeatability for parallel multiple-specimen imaging.

The Optigrid M is an excellent and cost efficient system for expanding the imaging capabilities of new or existing microscopes without taking
up valuable laboratory space. Offering confocal-like image quality, the Optigrid M integrates quickly and easily with Olympus IX and BX microscopes.

Please contact:
OLYMPUS LIFE SCIENCE EUROPA GMBH
Microscopy
Esther Ahrent
Department Manager Marketing Communication
Tel: +49 40 2 37 73 - 5426
Fax: +49 40 2 37 73 - 4647
E-mail: microscopy@olympus-europa.com
www.microscopy.olympus.eu

Bundled with the latest incarnation of DSS Player Pro software, both the DS-5000 and AS-5000 will be available from March 2008.
As flexible as you are
The DS-5000 is tailored to meet all professional dictation requirements and is part of the complete Olympus dictation solution comprising voice recorder, transcription kit and dictation management software. Regardless of the dictation situation, this first-class voice recorder has all bases covered in the entire process. Housed in a luxurious matt-black metal body that exudes elegance, it not only plays the part – it also looks the part.

No matter how diverse the jobs you have, the DS-5000 can handle it. Up to seven folders with up to 199 files each are available to organise recordings. So that important parts can be easily found later on, users can set up to 32 index marks per file during recording. Furthermore, the same number of verbal annotations can be appended to each file – giving users the chance to add special notes or ideas to specific sections of previously captured recording. A handy verbal comment function additionally allows an overall remark to be attached to a file, which can be used to give the transcriptionist general instructions, for example.

Voice files can be recorded in two different recording qualities, including the new extremely high quality QP mode, enabling the perfect balance of quality and quantity to be selected personally.

For easy access to the most commonly used functions, three programmable smart buttons are available. That’s why the DS-5000 incorporates numerous security features to ensure files are protected from unauthorised playback or duplication. For starters, this model allows voice files to be encrypted and decrypted. Furthermore, users can set up password protection on their device. The special DS-5000iD model even enables protection using biometric information. In this way maximum security is assured.

Simplicity in action
While the DS-5000 is a veritable powerhouse, operation remains simple. Menu choices are intuitive to let the user focus on the business at hand. A single slide switch allows the most common functions to be accessed in just a fraction of a second. Further navigation buttons are located ergonomically in the centre of the device to ensure easy data input and access to settings. Allowing all information to be seen at a glance in a choice of six languages, this model also features a large, back-lit LCD, which is protected against scratches thanks to a high-grade, coated screen.

A reliable companion at all times
A business tool is nothing if it is not dependable. That’s why Olympus has gone to great lengths to ensure the DS-5000 performs exceptionally in this regard. Its metal body protects it against the knocks and bumps of daily use. The slide switch mechanism, which runs on rubber rollers for virtually noise-free operation, has been thoroughly tested for extended use. The USB connector and battery door have been specifically designed for heavy-duty treatment. And when it’s time to take the recorder from the desktop cradle to the hand, users will enjoy the convenience of one-hand dock and undock functionality. Furthermore, due to extra-low battery consumption, the DS-5000 continues recording after others have long given up the ghost.

Streamline office workflow further with the AS-5000 Transcription Kit
By coupling the DS-5000 with the AS-5000 Transcription Kit, efficiency can be taken up several notches in businesses of all sizes. Dictation thereby becomes a fully integrated part of the office workflow and the conversion from voice to text is made significantly easier. The AS-5000 Transcription Kit includes a footswitch and headset to ensure ergonomic working by the transcriptionist.

In addition, process efficiency is optimised thanks to the new DSS Player Pro Transcription Software Module bundled with the AS-5000 Transcription Kit. PRESS INFORMATION
Ev. Amalie Sieveking-Krankenhaus

(Hamburg, 24 January 2008) The Hamburg-based hospital Ev. Amalie Sieveking-Krankenhaus is now home to Europe’s most modern high-tech operating room. Today, on 24 January 2008, this exceptional new facility was opened by Hamburg’s second mayor and senator for health, Birgit Schnieber-Jastram: “The Ev. Amalie Sieveking-Krankenhaus has taken a further step to build on its expertise as a centre for health for the north-east of Hamburg”. According to Ms Schnieber-Jastram, “The new operating room also represents an important investment for the hospital market of our metropolitan region, as well as improving the treatment options available to patients.”

The project was realised as part of the necessary measures to restore and expand the central operating room funded by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The Albertinen Group provided additional funding for the groundbreaking instruments, networks and camera systems. Olympus was responsible for equipping the operating rooms – and thus, helped to further underpin the Albertinen Group as one of the leading suppliers in the field of minimally invasive surgery in Hamburg. One of the first people to congratulate the hospital was the surgical expert Professor Antonio Lacy from Barcelona – who was connected live to the opening ceremony in the Ev. Amalie Sieveking-Krankenhaus.

The stunning design is the first thing to strike you: blue glazed walls frame the state-of-the-art operating room, with two large windows providing additional daylight. At a second glance, it is the sophisticated technology that makes you stop and stare! For example, digitalised X-ray images and endoscopy findings can be directly transmitted to the surgeons' screens. Live links to other hospitals, practices or to national and international congresses can also be set up at any time. “The new operating room represents a major technological leap for the Albertinen Group”, explained Prof. Dr. Fokko ter Haseborg, Chairman of the Board of the ‘Albertinen-Diakoniewerk’. “I am extremely pleased to have found such a strong and innovative partner in Olympus for the realisation of our plans.” Prof. ter Haseborg also expressed his gratitude to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg for granting funding for the extension of the central operating room without which it would not have been possible to establish this new technology in the first place.

The new high-tech operating room is a European reference centre for minimally invasive surgery techniques. It acts as an exemplary operating room in which visitors are given a direct insight into the functions and medical technology advantages. Ralf Pinnau, Managing Director of the Ev. Amalie Sieveking-Krankenhaus commented, “With this project, we are continuing our strategy of becoming a technological leader despite being a small hospital. Following the successful implementation of cardiac infarction care with one of North Germany's most modern catheter laboratories, together with Olympus we are now committed to further developing a centre for minimally invasive surgery and minimally invasive surgical gynaecology. Without a doubt, the hospital has become one of the most interesting places to work in the field of minimally invasive surgery which, in the long term, makes us even more attractive to potential employees and consultants.”

Technology: Advanced EndoALPHA
The new operating room features the advanced EndoALPHA system: this pioneering technology allows operating procedures in the Ev. Amalie Sieveking-Krankenhaus to be optimally planned. “With the optimisation of the operating room, we have contributed to the further development of system integration and surgery itself. Ergonomics, efficiency and the flow of information will all be improved”, according to Heinz Jacqui, Managing Director of Olympus Winter & Ibe GmbH. In the future, video and audio links to other departments in the Ev. Amalie Sieveking-Krankenhaus can be created – e.g. to the gastroenterology and radiology departments. The high-tech facility also includes the HDTV 1080 standard. As Dr. Thomas E. Langwieler, head of surgery at the Ev. Amalie Sieveking-Krankenhaus, explained, “The use of high-resolution HDTV camera systems together with NBI (Narrow Band Imaging) allows even the smallest of changes in the stomach or breast to be detected when performing tumour operations.”
The risk of tripping on cables lying on the floor is also a thing of the past in the new high-tech operating room – the devices can be easily and quickly put into the optimal position for each operation, thus providing maximum freedom of movement. The glazed walls are not only a visual highlight; they also mean that the room can be cleaned more quickly and effectively.

For questions or additional information, please contact::

Dr. Fabian Peterson
Leiter PR/Unternehmenskommunikation Albertinen-Gruppe
Büro: Albertinen-Krankenhaus
Süntelstr.11a, 22457 Hamburg
Tel: +49 40 5588 2408
E-Mail: Fabian.Peterson@albertinen.de

Julia Rasche
John Warning Corporate Communications GmbH
Gurlittstr. 24, 20099 Hamburg
Tel: +49 40 533088-83
E-Mail: j.rasche@johnwarning.de

Building on its formidable know-how as a leading opto-digital manufacturer, Olympus continues to raise the bar in optical quality with the release of three new types of lens elements.

Each represents a breakthrough to ensure picture-perfect results and imaging flexibility.

The new lens element types are a success story built on persistence, innovative thinking and high-tech precision. Each will have a significant impact on present and future construction of optical elements while at the same time leading to new advances in camera design. Olympus has among the world’s most advanced manufacturing facilities, producing lenses for cameras as well as medical equipment, endoscopes and microscopes. Advanced research and development at these plants enables Olympus to solve technical challenges in order to create lenses that others thought were impossible.

DSA (Dual Super Aspherical lens)
The new DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) lens element lets Olympus achieve the seemingly impossible – a curved lens element which is thinner at the centre than it is at the edge. It unites extremely high refraction ratios with the ability to compensate for aberrations. Previously, several conventional lens elements needed to be combined to obtain the same high definition performance that can now be obtained from a single DSA lens element.

EDA (Extra-low Dispersion Aspherical lens)
When light is refracted through a lens, it is dispersed into the colours of the rainbow. But because the colours do not have the same wavelength, they are not all able to be in focus on the same plane at the same time. This has a negative impact on the sharpness and colours of an image. With the EDA (Extra-low Dispersion Aspherical) lens, Olympus uses ED glass to resolve this traditional problem and minimise chromatic aberration for superb photographic performance. In the past the production of aspherical surfaces on ED lenses by means of moulding processes was seen as impossible because the surface is extremely fragile and fractures easily during the process. To solve this, Olympus developed an ultra-precise cooling method which protects the lens from breaks caused by thermal shock during the gradual cooling process after manufacture. The new technology requires three times more cooling accuracy than previous methods. Conventional ultrasonic washing also tended to damage ED lens surfaces, so Olympus developed its own special washing system. This ensures a more precise surface while guaranteeing the lens element is not damaged. These new technologies work in concert to enable EDA lenses to be successfully produced via a moulding process.

SHR (Super High Refractive index lens)
This is an extremely thin and highly refractive element that ensures the same level of refraction across the entire surface. In spite of its curvature, it provides edge-to-edge sharpness by delivering a uniform transmission of light and uniform picture surface.

These new types of lens elements are incorporated in the latest Olympus compact cameras. Innovations including the phenomenal 20x wide zoom of the SP-570 UZ or the 7x zoom within the ultra-slim dimensions of both the µ 1010, µ 1020, or the 3.6x wide zoom of the µ 1030 SW are just a small sample of where this cutting-edge optical technology has found its way to the market.

For questions or additional information, please contact:

Franziska Jorke
Olympus Europa GmbH
Tel.: +49-40-237 73-4759
Email: franziska.jorke@olympus-europa.com

PRESS INFORMATION
World’s No.1 ultra zoom camera

Hamburg, 22 January 2008 – The ultra zoom camera category has a new world champion: the Olympus SP-570 UZ brings you closer to the action than ever before with an incredible 20x wide optical zoom. Featuring built-in Dual Image Stabilisation, Olympus’ latest innovation for ambitious, specialist and creative photographers eliminates blur associated with camera shake to deliver razor sharp images, even at high levels of magnification. You can also breathe easy as you close in on the shot of a lifetime: sequential shooting at up to 13.5fps makes sure you won’t miss a thing. The SP-570 UZ will arrive in stores in March 2008.

Cutting-edge ultra zoom technology
Capture unique moments in the middle of a sports field or at the front of a college podium – even when you’re stuck on the sidelines or at the back of the theatre. Providing photographers with unprecedented telephoto power, the spectacular zoom capabilities of the SP-570 UZ bring your subject virtually close enough to touch. This 20x wide optical zoom model covers an equivalent focal range of 26-520mm, making it the world’s most powerful zoom camera in this segment*. Performance can be enhanced to an amazing 2600mm when combined with the 5.0x digital zoom. Even greater magnification up to a breathtaking maximum of 4420mm is possible when adding the optional TCON-17 Teleconverter and CLA-10 Adapter Ring.

Because the risk of blurry images grows as the focal length increases, Olympus incorporates Dual Image Stabilisation in the SP-570 UZ. It guards against blur caused by camera shake and is the perfect insurance for sports photographers and in all other situations where there are no second chances to capture the magic of the moment. Furthermore, this model’s 13.5fps** burst rate means not even a split-second of action will be missed. Additional smart technology also helps to capture unexpected surprises – the pre-capture mode enables recording of five frames** before the shutter is even released.

The big picture
The 26mm wide-angle capabilities of the SP-570 UZ make it perfect for getting the full picture when it comes to indoor and architectural photography. This ensures an ideal balance between point-and-shoot ease and creative freedom for ambitious photographers. Those seeking yet a further degree of control will appreciate the ability to manually adjust focus and zoom levels using the lens ring. In addition to a hotshoe, wireless flash control makes cable clutter a thing of the past: the SP-570 UZ boasts compatibility with the new Olympus FL-50R and FL-36R flash units which were initially introduced for use with the Olympus professional D-SLR model, the E-3. And dioptric correction enables those who wear glasses to use the viewfinder, while a menu in 38 languages ensures problem-free navigation for virtually everyone.

The fully-featured SP-570 UZ gives users unprecedented zoom power and a fill of extras that add up to a rewarding all-round photo experience. Hamburg, September 2007 – Right in time to capture all the mood and joy of this year’s festive season and beyond, four new models from the hugely successful µ range have been added to the Olympus line-up of compact digital cameras. Living up to the µ series’ enviable reputation for combining trend-setting design and high performance, the µ 1200, µ 830, µ 820 and µ 790 SW each incorporate features that will ensure those precious end-of-year holiday moments with friends and family are perfectly recorded. As the days grow shorter and the lighting gets more atmospheric, these µ cameras will capture the distinctive ambience faithfully thanks to BrightCapture Technology. Among the new highlights also included in each of these models is the innovative Face Detection Technology. It automatically recognises faces in a composition to guarantee their optimal exposure and focus – which is ideal for when people meet. Other stand-out features such as 12.0 Megapixels, Dual Image Stabilisation, 5x optical zoom or a huge LCD are to be found among these new models and ensure everyone will find what they’re looking for.
Olympus µ 1200: Power galore, style to boot
The brilliant Olympus µ 1200 packs an incredible 12 Megapixels and boasts leading-edge innovations including Face Detection Technology. This not only ensures proper exposure and focusing of faces, the special Smile Shot scene mode enables the camera to recognise when a subject smiles and then automatically takes the photo. In addition, Shadow Adjustment Technology has been integrated to detect dark areas in a composition and optimises exposure for a more realistic image. This powerful addition to the stylish µ range comes in a weatherproof* metal body in Midnight Black, which protects it against the elements. A giant 6.9cm HyperCrystal LCD makes the framing and reviewing of shots fun and easy. And the incorporation of the new TruePic III image processor ensures the most faithful reproduction of image colours, excellent noise performance and quicker processing speeds.

Olympus µ 830: A clear focus for all your memories
A premium marriage of design and features bestows the Olympus µ 830 irresistible qualities. With the luxury of a 5x optical zoom (equivalent to 36-180mm on a 35mm camera), photographers can get closer to subjects without having to move an inch. Double protection against blur caused by camera shake, which is more likely at high magnifications, is provided by Dual Image Stabilisation Ð a combination of high ISO setting and a mechanical image stabiliser. Furthermore, a smart, weatherproof*, aluminium exterior that is finished in Starry Silver or Midnight Black serves as a stylish defence against all kinds of unexpected weather. This means that picture-taking doesnÍt have to stop when the sunshine does. And by integrating Face Detection Technology, photos containing faces are all but guaranteed to come out perfectly sharp and exposed.

Olympus µ 820: Seeing is believing
Boasting both elegance and power, the Olympus µ 820 is a dream come true. It features an impressive 5x optical zoom and stylish, weatherproof* body in Midnight Black, Starry Silver, Ruby Red or Crystal Blue. Exciting colours and high magnification power are only the beginning: A huge 6.9cm HyperCrystal LCD makes this camera ideal for framing and reviewing shots, even when in surrounded by groups of friends or family. The µ 820 also lets you say goodbye to blurry or poorly-exposed faces in photos: The integrated Face Detection Technology scans compositions for faces and then optimally adjusts exposure and focus settings to return the best results. And in Smile Shot scene mode thereÍs no more need to say ñcheeseî. The camera is capable of recognising when the person being photographed smiles and then automatically releases the shutter at the right moment. Furthermore, 8.0 Megapixels ensure not a precious bit of image detail goes missing.

Olympus µ 790 SW: Takes everything in its stride
Shockproof** against falls from 1.5m and waterproof*** to a water pressure equivalent of 3m, the newest addition to the µ tough series keeps up with just about any active lifestyle. PRESS INFORMATION

Excellent external performance evaluation endorsement

Hamburg, 06.12.2007 – Olympus Life Science Europa GmbH today announced that external performance evaluation has confirmed that the newly launched AU-CONNECTOR has excellent operational capabilities. This compact, consolidated system which combines high workload Olympus analysers with Intelligent Sample Management was put to the test by scientists at a busy private laboratory in Munich, Germany.

The AU-CONNECTOR was evaluated with differing combinations of Olympus analysers. These included two AU2700 clinical chemistry systems together and the combination of an AU3000i immunoassay analyser with an AU2700. In particular, the external scientists noted that both AU-CONNECTOR hardware and software were extremely easy to operate, and that start up and shutdown times were superior to any other system to date. Furthermore, they were particularly impressed by the prioritised STAT sample handling, as well as the detailed results and sample information delivered by the software.

The evaluation also demonstrated that the impressive throughput target of over 600 tubes/hour can easily be met by the AU-CONNECTOR, and the analytical performance of connected analysers was completely unaffected. Intelligent Sample Management also ensured that both analysers were always running at the highest capacity ensuring the lowest possible turnaround times. For example, when one AU2700 had its reagents replenished, the system simply routed all the samples to the other instrument thus ensuring continuous operation and maximal processing capacity.

In addition to ensuring optimal sample transport to respective analysers and eliminating bottle necks, Intelligent Sample Management was also found to ensure 100% protection of sample integrity. It achieves this by always sending tests that may be contamination sensitive to the AU3000i first, as this employs disposable tips.

The ability to archive or sort samples into third party analyser racks after analysis is an additional feature allowing simple management of samples requiring testing elsewhere. Fully automated validation, including rerun and reflex testing without disrupting routine work was also possible due to Olympus dataWizard. Operator specific rules could also be executed through this advanced data management system and validation of all results of a sample was performed.

“The customer was very impressed by the performance of the AU-CONNECTOR”, said Dr. Harm Vitzthum, Commercial Marketing Manager for Olympus. “The system met all of the expectations of the evaluation and proved itself to be a worthy member of the Olympus family.”

Please contact:

OLYMPUS LIFE SCIENCE EUROPA GMBH
Diagnostics
Esther Ahrent
Department Manager Marketing Communication
Tel: +49 40 2 37 73 - 5426
Fax: +49 40 2 37 73 - 4647
E-mail: diagnostics@olympus-europa.com
www.olympus-europa.com

PRESS INFORMATION

The world’s most modern medical training centre opens in Hamburg

Olympus sets a milestone for the future of medical technology

Hamburg, 22 September 2008 – With the new Olympus Medical Training Centre (OMTC), Olympus Europa Holding GmbH opens the world’s most modern training facility. The centre will serve as a hub for state-of-the-art training and ongoing professional development of medical specialists from around the world.

A leading manufacturer of integrated systems solutions and functions, Olympus provides a full range of equipment for comprehensive operating room set-ups. During procedures, the advanced cutting-edge technologies take a back seat to facilitate sophisticated handling and easy operability. The new OMTC is a further substantial move by Olympus to enhance its leading position in the field of medical technology. Following an overall investment of EUR 3 million, this international development and competence facility has become a major port of call for medical professionals from around the globe.

With the inauguration of its new training centre, Olympus underscores the significance of Hamburg as a leading site for medical technology. The centre provides medical practitioners with a state-of-the-art training facility featuring high-end medical and surgical systems, where they are instructed in the operation of the latest medical equipment in the field of minimally invasive surgery.

Four training rooms, two seminar areas and an auditorium with 120 seats where international guests can participate in workshops and symposiums are spread over 1,000m2 of floor space. At the heart of the training centre is the Olympus Advanced ENDOALPHA operating theatre: a visionary control and communication centre that integrates all necessary medical equipment and peripheral systems.

Olympus not only sees doctors using these facilities, but also the entire operating room team. Furthermore, additional areas are available for training service personnel and the preparation of instruments. It was a conscious decision to construct the new OMTC at the site of the successful Olympus Winter & Ibe (OWI) subsidiary in Hamburg. OWI supports doctors worldwide with premium-grade endoscopic systems for minimally invasive surgery and is the global market leader in, among other areas, the important flexible endoscopy segment. This was reason enough for the Japanese parent company to integrate the forward-looking training centre within the Hamburg-based subsidiary.
The area of medical technology is an important core business segment for the Olympus group. Currently, it accounts for a sales volume of USD 3 billion. With the opening of the OMTC in Hamburg, Olympus Europa Holding GmbH also further strengthens its research, development and production capabilities.

More than 650 people are employed in the area of medical technology in Hamburg alone. Of these, 100 work in research and development – and around 12 per cent of the group’s turnover is invested in this important business segment. The medical technology market is currently booming: in just the past 18 months, 100 new employees were hired, and the demand for further highly-qualified staff remains very high.

“Investment in research and development is vital”, explains Heinz Jacqui, Executive Managing Director of Olympus Winter & Ibe GmbH. “Not only does it enhance our own competitiveness, it also helps to create jobs. With our new training centre. Olympus will generate significant worldwide attention and interest. Our challenge is to continue along this path in order to maintain and develop our competence and innovative advantage in the future”.

For questions or additional information, please contact:
Silvia Schanze
International Sales & Marketing
Olympus Winter & Ibe GmbH
Tel. +49 40 6 69 66-2370
Email: silvia.schanze@olympus-owi.com
